Prayers of Gratitude for Workers We Take for Granted

Blessings in tedious tasks.

Bless those who mop floors.

Most of us don’t get too excited about household chores like cleaning the bathroom or mopping the floors or emptying the trash. But when we walk into a public building like a hospital, church or office, how blessed we are that someone has done just that–worked hard to clean those floors and bathrooms and put out the trash. Thank You, Lord, for the blessing of those who clean.

As we drive down roads and highways that are safe and smooth, free of potholes and with clear shoulders, how blessed we are to have those miles of pavement maintained by hard, physical labor in extreme heat or cold. God, thank You for the blessing of those who work on our roads so that we can ride in comfort and safety.

What about nurses, aides and doctors who care for sick and anxious–and sometimes cranky–patients. Who often deal with definitely unglamorous situations and shoulder the heartaches of those under their care? Lord, thank You for those who minister to us when we’re sick. Bless them for blessing us.

Then there’s the spouse or partner who loads the dishwasher, folds the clothes, works hard to earn a living, helps with the children? And they do it day after day, year after year, simply because they love us. Thank You, God, for the blessing of those we so often take for granted.

Thank You for reminding me to stop, in the midst of my own tasks that often seem like drudgery, and thank God that I’m blessed enough to be able to do them.

Father, even though some days are hard and I sometimes feel that what I’m doing is menial in the overall scheme of life, let me see that I’m exactly where You want me to be, and that instead of complaining about the drudgery, I should be thanking you for its blessing.
