Consistent habits are the foundation of an authentically positive lifestyle. These are the practices and routines that become so natural to us over time that we might call them “healthy no-brainers.” We hardly even notice them once we’re living them. These are my five most effective habit-starting strategies—I hope they help you build new habits on your journey as well.

1. Use a Daily Reminder Card

If your new habit is a once-a-day project like flossing your teeth or doing 10 push-ups, grab a piece of sturdy paper and color each side a different, vibrant color. You can even accomplish this with two sticky notes. One side’s color will indicate the task is still a “to-do” item; the other side will mean you’re “done for today.” Place the card somewhere you can easily access it, and let it be a reminder to get to it…or to feel satisfied that you’ve shown up for yourself today.

2. Attach Your New Habits to Times of Day

Lots of healthy habits have to do with life categories like nutrition, fitness, work, or spirituality. But new habits can be easier to establish if you connect them to time-touchpoints throughout the day. These could be moments like mornings, mealtimes, after-work evenings, or bedtime. You might even consider setting a calendar reminder to take a 10-minute midday meditation break, for example, so you can help yourself get used to the rhythm of your new healthy habits.

3. Climb a “Habit-Ladder”

In addition to being fun to say, a “habit-ladder” is a way to work gradually toward incorporating a new routine into your daily life. Instead of making a zero-to-60 goal, think about smaller spots along the way, then aim for those, day by day. If you are looking to better your eating habits, for example, imagine a first rung of your habit ladder like having a piece of fruit every day with breakfast for a week. With confidence that you’ve taken the first step, you’ll be ready to climb ahead.

4. Build New Habits on Your Existing Good Habits

Positive self-talk is in itself an important habit—and I’ve found it easier to stick with when I build it into my existing routine. For me, that means meeting myself in the mirror while I brush my teeth in the morning. Being able to look with kindness into my own eyes grounds me, and repeating gentle, affirming words to myself, like “strength,” “patience,” or “joy” leaves me relaxed and empowered to step into my day. This affirmation became a habit because I connected it to something I was doing anyway—brushing my teeth. What preexisting habits of yours can you build on with something you’re looking to add?

5. Celebrate Your Successes

A new year is a time to look forward, but also to look back with all the positive changes you’ve already brought into your life. As you set your sights on new horizons, don’t forget to celebrate the path you’ve already traveled, and the habits and routines you’ve succeeded in adopting. If you look closely, I know you’ll be encouraged by your inner strength and resolve, and inspired to keep building the authentic, positive life you seek.

Any tips for what helps you build new habits and make them stick?
