The blueberry is a staple of summer. With its vitamin- and antioxidant-rich superfood status, this fruit is worthy of celebration—from breakfast through dessert.
Try these new ways to enjoy these tiny, juicy globes of joy.
1) Toss into Salads
A zip of sweetness in your summer salad is always welcome.
2) Make a Sauce
Cook fresh blueberries with a little water (1 cup of water for 3 cups of blueberries), sugar (more or less, depending on how sweet your berries are), and a sprinkle of vanilla. Stir in a tablespoon of cornstarch dissolved into some cool water once the berries are saucy and soft. Spoon the luscious sauce over pancakes, ice cream, grilled meats, yogurt or whatever summer dreams you can make come true.
3) Bake Pies, Muffins or Cakes
Blueberry pies and muffins are classic, but you can take even the most basic pound cake or boxed vanilla cake mix and elevate it by adding blueberries. Bake the cake as directed for 5 minutes, then sprinkle fresh berries onto the batter before completing the bake. Or, coat berries in flour before folding into any cake or muffin recipe.
4) Pair Them with Other Flavors
Blueberries are friendly fruits, meaning there are flavors and textures they are particularly suited for. Lemon zest or juice is always a good companion, as is vanilla or even mint for sweet dishes or refreshing beverages. For savory flavors, try them with caramelized onions, fresh thyme, or earthy nutmeg. And of course, you can broaden your blueberry season by pairing them with their fellow summer superstars—raspberries, blackberries, peaches, nectarines and figs.
5) Save Some for Later
Lay in your supply for the cold months ahead. Spread fresh blueberries out on a sheet pan and freeze. Store in a sealed zip-top bag to stir into oatmeal, smoothies and muffins all year round.
