The Gifts of the New Year

What’s ahead for you this year?

Edward Grinnan

One of the best things about the New Year is looking ahead to all the exciting and challenging things you have before you, the gifts of the year. What’s more thrilling, though, is to know that there are just as many exciting things in store that you don’t know about yet, hidden gifts that could actually define the kind of year—or even life—that you have.

This time last year I had no idea that in August I would embark on one of the most inspiring journeys of my life, to see the famous Passion Play at Oberammergau, and visit en route the imperial cities of Budapest, Vienna and Prague. Best of all I got to travel with 80 of you readers who signed up through our friends at Travel with Spirit.

Now we are discussing a fall Holy Land tour by cruise ship that will take us from Istanbul to Alexandria, Cairo and finally the Holy Land itself, where we will see all the sacred sites and then some. The trip is not finalized yet, but I’ll let you know when you can book your reservations. I’ve wanted to ride a camel for a long time, ever since I saw Lawrence of Arabia.

The one thing I do know that will be coming down the road soon is a book I’ve written about the assistant editor’s job I found here at Guideposts, a job that would turn out to save my life when all I wanted was a place to light, catch my breath and figure out what to do with myself next. It had been put to me bluntly by some serious men who were trying to help me before it was too late that I should find a job, any job, and stick with it for one year. Just a year.

That was 24 years ago. And that is what the book is about—what brought me here to Guideposts, how I changed and what keeps me here, quite happy.
