Helio Castroneves: How to Be a Champion

Three-time Indy champ Helio Castroneves shares how he’s been able to be so successful.

[MUSIC PLAYING] To be a champion, you have to act like a champion, meaning you have to dedicate your life. You have to work hard. You have to love what you do as well and do it with enjoyment and the pleasure and fun. But I guess if you put those recipes together, you know, ingredients together, you’re going to have a great flavor in the end and it will be perfect.

You’ve got to believe, you know. There were so many times in racing competition, you know, things happens to make you stronger. But you don’t understand that. You feel like, why my engine is breaking? Why my I’m crashing? Why? You know, you sometimes doubt yourself.

But one thing we always kept was the faith, you know. There was a reason for that. Maybe, you know, he is trying to prove another point and things like that. So faith always kept me really strong, even from those very difficult moments. I always knew that he’s writing something good, and that definitely kept me strong.

I had a great experience doing Dancing With the Stars. And for me what I learned, it’s a simple thing, to be honest. If I put my heart, my head, my soul into something, certainly I’ll succeed. And I have to say that’s exactly what I did on Dancing With the Stars.

I didn’t know how to dance except like, you know, that the old dance that everybody does. But I dedicated, you know. I was having a lot of fun, but it was very hard work. But it taught me something very, very interesting that, man, I couldn’t believe that I was able to do that. But it was exactly that. They gave me an opportunity. They gave me some tools.

I had a great teacher, I’d listening for their advice and we won. So for me, I’ll never forget that experience. I totally recommend to everyone, you know, to dance because not only is it great exercise but it’s great for your mind. So I’m glad I did that, and I certainly work very hard to win that competition. And it’s still, to this day, I still thank a lot of fans for their votes.
