Change is hard, even when it’s good. Take the time I was eight months pregnant with my first child, living in a new town. My old college roommate had just moved out of state. I was about to leave my job to be a stay-at-home mom. I was scared. And I was lonely. So I asked God for a friend.
I met Marti at our husbands’ company picnic. “Do you know what you’re having?” she asked. It was hard to miss my beach-ball belly. “A boy,” I said. We discovered we both loved historical fiction and the Iowa State Cyclones. And we both had a strong faith.
I thanked God for answering my prayer. Little did I know then how deeply he understood my needs…and Marti’s.
I gave birth to Carter. Three months later Marti told me she was pregnant. “I’m having a boy too!” Her Caleb came into the world. Then I had Owen; she had Aiden. Two years later she had Ethan and I had Lewis.
Marti and I still talk about books and the Cyclones, but we talk more about our boys’ antics. “Owen won’t take off his Batman costume.” “Carter flushed a golf ball down the toilet.” “Lewis stuck a toad inside the van’s gas tank door.”
Six boys in six years! Marti and I are up to our ears in dirt, bugs, superheroes and light sabers. God knew no mom should go through such things alone.
