Those who know me–my family, friends and co-workers–know that my life Bible verse is Colossians 3:17. This is the verse that I try to live by on a daily basis.
You’ll find it written in any of my books that I’ve signed over the years and on the front of my website in big letters. Before I was an author, I was an emergency room nurse, and before that, I was an open-heart recovery room nurse and assistant to a cardiovascular surgeon.
Both nursing jobs were extremely intense and stressful because you never knew what the day would hold. Would it be life, or would it be death? Before each day started, I would say a simple prayer:
Lord, whatever I do, please walk before me as I enter each room. Let my eyes see what you see, Let my hands be your hands, and help me to think and move fast.
Unfortunately, I have seen my share of people die over the years. On the other hand, I have helped save many lives, but I didn’t do it alone. It took a team–doctors, nurses, technicians, respiratory therapists, anesthesia and surgeons. We all had our jobs to do, and we worked as a team to accomplish the goal to save a life.
And when that life was saved, we’d give a lot of high fives, a few fist bumps, and eat a lot of chocolate.

Today, I’m not writing about saving physical lives, but spiritual ones. The stakes are just as high as when I was working as a nurse. We, as parents and grandparents, all have to work together to reach teens in today’s world and guide them through the many temptations thrown their way. While it’s Christ’s job to save them, we can help protect them from or prepare them for the emotional destruction that rises before them each day.
Here are two ways you can help protect your girls:
1) Teach them to pray this prayer.
Lord, please walk before me as I enter each room and protect me from the temptations of the world. Let my eyes see what you see, Let my hands be your hands, and help me to think and move fast.
2) Remind them of Colossians 3:17.
Whatever you do whether word or deed, do it in the name of the Lord Jesus and give thanks to the Father through Him.
3) Teach them to thank God.
Lord, thank You for saving me from dangers seen and unseen!
