Teen Suicide–Is Your Teen at Risk?

Signs to look for if your teen seems hopeless, depressed or disconnected.

Suicide is a topic we all would like to avoid. It’s devastating for those who have lost a loved one this way. None of us want to think about our teens taking their own lives because they’re so young and just beginning their journey in life.

However, teen suicide is the third leading cause of death for young people ages 15 to 24, surpassed only by homicide and accidents, according to online statistics.

Research has shown that teenagers who have attempted suicide were trying to escape from a situation that seemed impossible to deal with or to escape the feelings of rejection, loneliness or depression.

There are many reasons for suicide. There is never just one cause, but depression–a feeling of hopelessness–seems to be one of the factors that can lead to teen suicide.

Is your daughter or granddaughter dealing with depression or talking about dying? Is she feeling hopeless or giving away her possessions? Is she pulling away from her friends and family? If so, seek godly professional help for her right away. Don’t delay.

Keep in mind that even though there are often signs of emotional instability, teens occasionally act impulsively. A sudden break-up with a boyfriend, a big fight with a friend, or ongoing bullying are just a few things that can cause a teen to make a reckless decision to end their life.

Take time and talk to your daughter every day to know what is going on in her life. There is hope and the Lord is walking with you every step you take.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

Seek Him today in everything you do. (Psalm 46:1)
