Several weeks ago, my evening routine was disrupted. I got home much later than usual which meant that I fed the cats, read my mail and went to bed. There was no time for reading or watching the Yankees or a favorite TV program. No time for letting the cats snuggle up to me on the couch.
When I climbed under the covers in bed, Mimi, who usually curls next to me was nowhere to be found. Neither was Lubya who, if he joins us in the bedroom, stakes out a place either at the foot of the bed or in the armchair near the window. I felt slightly bereft, abandoned. But I was also very tired and soon fell asleep.
In the morning, I woke to find Mimi stretched out on one side of me and Lubya on the other side. I was part of a cat sandwich! For three nights running.
Once my routine re-established itself, Mimi went back to curling up somewhere next to me. And Lubya returned to the foot of the bed.
Our routine is comforting. But that cat sandwich was sure delicious!
