Who Dat Cat?

Why nicknames for feline friends are a serious matter.

“The naming of cats is a difficult matter. It isn’t just one of your holiday games. You may think at first I’m mad as a hatter. When I tell you a cat must have three different names…”

I stumbled on this quote from T. S. Eliot, and at first I didn’t know what he was talking about. Three names! How silly. But then I started thinking about what I call my cats.

Lubya’s name is derived from the Polish lubic, which means “to like”—and Lubya likes just about everyone. In fact, he greets visitors at the door. Of course, he’s shamelessly angling for a body rub and a pat on his head, which he generally charms guests into giving him. But I also call him Mr. Lubya, when I want to be more formal, and Lubi, as a nickname.

I have nicknames for his sister, Mimi. I call her Meems and Mimikins.

So tell me, what names and nicknames have you given your cats? Email us at lovedemcats@guideposts.org.
