I’m coming up on two weeks of my Gratitude Challenge. So far, so good. One funny thing I’ve noticed, though–it’s hard not to get repetitive in my gratitude!
The other day, as I was writing down my thanks, I noticed I’d used the phrase “I’m still thankful for…” I looked over my lists from the past week. The same people and things kept showing up! My parents, my sisters, friends, funny co-workers, even that sandwich bread I wrote so lovingly about in my last post.
At first, I felt a little bit guilty about that. Like I had to be completely original with each and every expression of gratitude.
Then again, what could be more powerful than continually giving thanks, not just when the miracle or wonder occurs, but long after it too? It might feel repetitive, but it helps ensure you don’t take those constant blessings in your life for granted.
With that in mind, I’m going to get really repetitive. I have a feeling God doesn’t mind the sound of a broken record!
1) The joy of improv.
Improv came into my life in kind of a funny way. Now I can’t imagine my life without it–it’s one of the best things to have happened to me in 2015. I always look forward to my classes. A chance to laugh, play games and ham it up. Really, what could be better?
2) A note from the past.
Last week, I was in the middle of editing several stories for the next issue of Mysterious Ways magazine and struggling with a bit of writer’s block. I was so frustrated with myself. On Thursday, I searched my email inbox for something and randomly stumbled upon an old email that I wrote to myself in July 2013, back when I first started at Guideposts. “This is a note to yourself from yourself to read when you think your writing is no good…” the letter said. I couldn’t help but smile. Encouragement found just in time!
3) Apples as far as the eye can see.
Forget an apple a day–I’ve been eating at least two or three! They’re just so good this time of year. And I’m thankful to live in a state that has the best apples around (take that, Washington!).
4) A small MRI success story.
Since October, I’ve been trying to schedule an MRI appointment before the year is up. It’s been like pulling teeth! The first person I talked to said she’d put my request in “the system.” I found out later that never happened. The second person couldn’t wait to get off the phone with me. Finally, I got the call that my MRI had been approved! It was a small accomplishment, yet I was thrilled. Going to doctors, getting MRIs, dealing with insurance companies–it’s no picnic. But this little incident somehow made me grateful for it all.
5) The friendliest face in the neighborhood.
My best friend, Gino, and I met almost six years ago at one of my previous jobs. In the good old days, we’d chat at our desks, take breaks together. It was wonderful having a best bud so close by. Well, this past month, he got a new job…just blocks from the Guideposts office! Now I can meet my pal for a coffee like old times.
