Spiritual Help for Those Dealing with Addiction

Ty’Ann Brown shares spiritual tips for those who are beginning the journey to recovery from addiction.

Did you know that more than 23 million Americans struggle with addiction? Whether it’s smoking, drugs, alcohol, or even food, addictions are rampant in our culture. If you’re dealing with addiction, know that you’re not alone. God is with you, and has provided spiritual help for your journey to recovery.

My name is Ty’Ann Brown, and I’d like to tell you about that help. First, the Bible says to listen to life-giving counsel. That means asks for assistance from those who can help. There are medical professionals, addiction and recovery centers, who are willing and able to give you the help you need to break from your addiction.

Addiction can make it difficult for us to feel worthy of love. But you are God’s child, and God is the perfect parent who loves you unconditionally. With medical help and therapy for your addictions, you can start to understand the ways that you’ve been harmful to yourself and others, and begin to make amends.

Write down the names of everyone your addictive behavior has hurt. Then look for the ways to right the wrongs committed against them. As you work to heal damaged relationships, seek out community with people who are committed to recovery, and can understand what you’re facing. Together, you can lift one another up.

Finally, remember, God created you on purpose to be a blessing to the world. So stay in the fight. The world needs you.
