Time for a Pick-Me-Up

I woke up feeling tired and sluggish. Not even a jumbo mug of coffee helped. Here’s what I did to pick up my energy level and attitude.

Even though I got enough sleep, I woke up today feeling tired and sluggish. I guess the late nights at the office on deadline, the dreary weather and the time of year have gotten to me. It was dark when Winky and I left the apartment for her walk this morning, and that dragged down my energy level—and my positive attitude—even more.

Not even the jumbo mug of triple-X coffee that I downed at my desk helped. I managed to cross a few things off my to-do list but by lunchtime, I knew I needed a pick-me-up. Make that several.

First I dropped by Design*Sponge for some visual inspiration. I headed straight for the Sneak Peeks section, which has photo tours of creatively decorated homes. I clicked on one I missed when it was originally posted: Nikole Herriott’s apartment in Toronto. Only 390 square feet but she’s given it so much rustic charm. The simple, understated beauty of her apartment is really uplifting.

Next I went home and took Winky for a longer-than-usual afternoon walk. I wouldn’t call it sunny exactly, but the natural light and the extra exercise were good for both of us.

Then I noticed the bakery around the corner from my apartment had caramel apples in the window. What a treat—they usually offer strictly traditional Italian cookies, cakes and pastries. I love caramel apples! I grabbed one and took it back to the office.

Back at my desk, I stuck in my earbuds and blasted Nelly Furtado on my iPod. Lately I’ve been working out to some songs off her album Loose, so just listening to them got my blood pumping.

Consider me picked up! Not all of these are scientifically proven positive thinking techniques (ahem, caramel apples?), but they work for me. What works for you when you need a pick-me-up?
