How We Met

[MUSIC PLAYING] Hi. I’m Alina Larson here with guideposts.com, and we’re here in Manhattan on a beautiful spring day to talk to people about how they met. 

Hi. 

Hi. 

Hi. I’m Michael, and this is Jill. And– isn’t she lovely? And we have a lovely view of the Empire State Building right now. 

And anyways, we met a year and a half ago doing a reading. We’re both actors, see, and we met in the room. And we just became friends for a year and 1/2, and became close friends, and– [INHALING] and it happened this spring in Washington, DC. 

She came back down to do a show, a little reading, and then spring hit. It was the new moon. It was just full a couple of days ago. I don’t know when this will air, but it was our moon. And we decided, let’s do it. Let’s fall in love. 

My wife Dorothy, who’s sitting beside me, and I met at school in the– around about 1947. We celebrated our golden wedding anniversary two years ago. We came to New York to celebrate. But we’ve been married 52 years– 53 years this year. 

My friend of mine was with me. I said, oh, look. There’s Keith from school. So she said, I bet he comes and asks you to dance. And he did. We danced on and off throughout the evening. And then he said, could I take you home? And I looked at him, and I said– was it four words or five words? 

Four important words, and I knew I’d collect then. 

“Have you got a car?” He said yes. It was his father’s. “In that case, you can take me home.” And we dated from there. Took us three years to become engaged, because I had other friends. But in the end, he made it. And that was 52 years ago last November. 

Well, it was last summer. I was running through Central Park, and I came across my now-boyfriend playing Frisbee with some friends at a picnic. And I stopped to stretch. And then all of a sudden, the Frisbee came over. [LAUGHS] 

And then he came running with it. And I thought it was just a coincidence, but it turns out later after we started dating that it was intentional– that he had thrown it over as like an excuse to strike up conversation. So we met in Central Park, and we’ve been dating for a year and 1/2 now. 

I met my boyfriend in 2005 from a mutual friend at work. She introduced us. She was telling us about– she was telling me about him for probably a month before I met him. 

And then he came, and he started bringing me lunch every day. And then eventually, we hooked up. But we broke up. And then– [LAUGHS] through Facebook this year, we got back together. 

I met my wife in college. We had multiple classes together, and we became very good friends. We hung out in a close group of friends for like two years. And I basically pursued her. She ran. I eventually caught her and asked her to marry me, and we’ve been married for 12 years. 

Basically, we met at work, of all places. And I kind of liked him for quite a while. And we’ve been together four years since then. We got and two weeks ago. But yeah, that was basically how we met– just through work as friends, and it progressed from there and went on to something a little bit more. So it’s nice. [LAUGHS] 

When you first meet someone, I think you either feel attracted to them or you don’t, and I was quite attracted to him. And then he was really funny, and made me laugh loads. And I just asked him out. I just decided. I was like, do you want to go out? And it was really awkward, because we didn’t– because we worked together, we weren’t sure whether we should. But yeah, it’s worked out perfectly. 

A bunch of my friends and I were out at a bar, and we were having some sake bombs to celebrate my friend’s birthday. And then the only people in the restaurant were a table of us guys and one girl a few tables away. So we felt rude not inviting her over. 

We invited her over to share some drinks with us. Turns out we’re from similar areas of New Jersey, and she is a comic. She’s into the same sort of things we are, and now we are off dating. And it’s magic at first sight so far. 

We were students. We were at the party. I actually wanted to go to the ladies room. But when I walked to the stairs to go upstairs, this guy was sitting on the stairs, and he started chatting to me. He made me laugh, and we just spend the rest evening together. And that was it, really. 

We were in the same honors geometry class freshman year. And he was in love with me, apparently, but I didn’t know who he was. And I found out he wanted to ask me to homecoming. But I didn’t want to be with him, so I hid in the bathroom. 

And fast forward to junior year, we were both president of our choir club. And we were opposite each other in a show. And it was a romantic show, and by the end of it, we were together. And we were together for three years. Still my best friend to this day, so– 

Rob and I met 50 years ago in a beautiful town on the River Murray in Renmark in South Australia. I’d been to Sydney for six or seven months working. And when I came home– that was my home place where I was born and bred– he was at my mother’s place for a party for my brother. And we were married 48 years on the 28th of April this year.
