Slowing Down and Listening to God

How to let God speak to you.

After a day away from home, I clicked the button on our answering machine to see what I’d missed. We have six business phone lines that forward to our home number, and since many of the calls on our answering machine are for my husband, I wasn’t paying really close attention as I straightened up our family room while the messages played.

That is, until I heard a deep male voice say, “This is the FBI calling for Michelle Cox.” Let me just say my attention was glued to the answering machine as panic pumped up my blood pressure. He continued, “Please give me a call.” And then he left his name and phone number.

What in the world could the FBI be calling me about? I’m the most law-abiding citizen I know. I’ve never even had a speeding ticket. And now the FBI was calling me!

A million things ran through my mind as I ran to grab a pen and paper to write his name and number down. I couldn’t think of anything I’d done that would put me on the radar of the FBI. I quickly dialed the number, my heart racing.

I said, “This is Michelle Cox. You left a message on my answering machine and I’m returning your call.” I was quite relieved when he told me that they were calling me to ask questions about a man who was up for a judgeship. The two of us had worked together in politics for a number of years. So the FBI agent set a time for me to come in and meet with them. Whew, what a relief!

Let’s just say that the FBI agent’s message on our answering machine caught my attention in a major way.

You know, sometimes God also has to catch our attention. We get busy. Distracted. Occupied with other things. And we don’t hear His voice as we rush around like a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

We forget what an amazing privilege it is that the God of the universe wants to spend time with us.

Today would be the perfect time for all of us to spend time in His Word. To share our hearts in prayer, and to say, “Okay, God. You have my full attention. What message do you have for me today?”
