Learning to Wait

Learning to trust God and to know that He will provide, especially in times of stress.

How God watches out for us in times of stress.

I watched from the kitchen door as my husband, Paul, walked down our yard towards the meadow and woods at the back of our property. I could hear him shaking the bucket of corn on his nightly trek to feed the deer.

At the end of each day, before he even comes in the house from work, I hear Paul walk in the basement, and I listen for the sound of him scooping the corn into the bucket. He loves watching the deer and is so faithful about feeding them. In addition to the corn, he keeps a salt block for them and sometimes adds salted acorns and apples to their evening treats.

The deer aren’t the only ones who show up for feeding time. Sometimes it looks like a wild kingdom out there as they are joined by hungry turkeys, squirrels and rabbits. As the seasons pass, fawns with spots still on them show up as well as dozens of baby turkeys.

But here’s the part I especially love. Paul dumps the corn on the ground just a few feet outside the edge of the woods. Most nights, he hasn’t taken 10 steps back toward the house before the deer have already emerged for their food.

They’re waiting on Paul because they’ve learned he won’t hurt them, and they can trust him to supply their needs.

Whew, that makes me cry—because that’s exactly what God so lovingly does day after day. He supplies my needs just because He loves me.

And yet, I’m often not as wise as those deer. Even though God has a proven track record of being faithful, I encounter a need, and stress about it, worrying myself sick about what I’m going to do.

Maybe I need to be more like those deer as they wait on my sweet husband each evening—maybe I need to hover closer to the One Who loves me, Who always does things for my good and Who has promised to always supply my needs.
