My Thanks and Blessings

As we get older, we become more grateful, and grow closer to God and our faith.

Edward Grinnan gives thanks

I recently finished writing a book on personal change—both mine and others’—that will be published this spring by Guideposts.

Like most authors, I penned an acknowledgment page where I thanked the people who helped make the book possible. Once I started, it was hard to stop. When I thought about it, there were just so many people in my life to whom I owe an incalculable debt of gratitude and love, and without whom I might not have been around to write the book.

One of the pleasures of growing older is the perspective it brings to the store of blessings that multiply in your life; growing older means growing more grateful.

Of course there is loss and heartache and disappointment too. But it is against these adversities that our blessings stand in high relief, the joy of family and friends and faith and work, and gratitude for the gifts that each new day holds. These are the things that make us whole, and that, as I daily remind myself, I am so richly, undeservedly blessed with. Even in these dark and troubled times I find more to be thankful for than not, much more. I bet you do too.

Gratitude is a practice of the soul that helps us live happier lives and grow closer to God, and our blessings are the living evidence of his grace. Look around you. I imagine you could all fill a page or two yourself with names of people and things to remember this Thanksgiving.

One of the things everyone here at Guideposts is thankful for is you. Without you, there is no Guideposts. So in case I haven’t said it recently, thank you for your loyalty and support.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
