Never Too Old to Aim High

A Georgia man of nearly 60 dreams of climbing Kilimanjaro. Is it a goal worth pursuing at his age?

Mount Kilimanjaro. Elevation 19,340 feet. My dream had always been to climb it.

But time had gotten away from me. I was almost 60. Maybe I was too old for macho fantasies?

I sat down to talk the idea over with my wife. We went through the practical details of such an undertaking. We listed the pros and cons.

“It’s all right with me,” my wife said finally, “if a doctor says it’s okay.”

I made an appointment for an electrocardiogram test, and passed. I now had my doctor’s support and my wife’s. But part of me still wondered if I wasn’t being foolhardy.

Please, God, I thought as I got dressed, give me some assurance that if I go on this journey, you will go with me.

I stepped into the hospital’s hallway. Music played over the sound system in the ceiling. I strained to hear. The tune was familiar.

That song from The Sound of Music. What was it called? “Climb Every Mountain.” The hair on the back of my neck stood up.

With full confidence that I was chasing a reasonable goal, I climbed Kilimanjaro. Dreams still come true at the age of 60!

Watch and listen to "Climb Every Mountain" from The Sound of Music.
