Valentine season is rolling around again—that time where we think about the people in our lives and why they are special to us. Yes, love is in the air, and that’s a good thing! But there’s a love that’s impossible to beat, because God’s love is perfect. He loves all of us—despite our flaws and failures—and He loves us so much that He gave His life for us.
I’ve always been fascinated by the individuals God chose to include in the Bible, and it always brings me relief that none of them are perfect. That gives me hope. It’s evident that He loves all of them, but there are a few people in the Bible that seem to have an extra close and special relationship with Him—and there are some important things we can learn from them.
1. David
David was one of those people. He’s described as “a man after God’s own heart.” David was willing to trust God and to step out in faith. I mean, how many of us would have dared to face a giant with just a slingshot and a few small stones? David messed up so many times, but he had a repentant heart and his deepest desire was to please God. Those are great lessons for all of us.

2. Abraham
Abraham was known as “a friend of God.” He loved his Friend so much that he was willing to leave everything behind when God asked Him to do so. They were so close that the Lord personally gave Abraham the news that he was going to be a father. And Abraham was willing to give up what was most precious to him (his son, Isaac) because God was most precious of all. We can learn a lot from their relationship.
3. Job
God loved Job so much that He used him as His poster child, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil?” Wow, can you imagine the God of the universe saying those things about you?
That’s the kind of relationship I want with God, to be a woman after His heart, to be His friend, and to live blameless and uprightly for Him. I want to love Him more—and what could be a more perfect time to pledge that than during this month that’s set aside for love?
