Singing from the Heart

Learning how to worship from listening to children sing.

Something precious happened in church this past Sunday morning. The building was so packed for our Easter drama that the ushers had to bring in more chairs. With all the voices, it was beautiful when the congregation sang, but then my husband and I smiled as the children’s singing rose above the rest.

Their pure, sweet joy as they sang from their hearts moved me to tears. And it made me think about a few things. Often, we adults sing by rote without really thinking about the meaning of the words. But, oh my, those little ones sang with such fervor!

When’s the last time we truly sang from our hearts, voices uplifted in praise to the Creator of the universe? When’s the last time we let those words seep into our souls? When’s the last time we worshipped like those children did last Sunday?

When we worship Him, our troubles seep away. Our souls are touched and soothed. And joy is unfurled in our hearts.

Here’s what God says about praise:

“Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!” (Psalm 100:2)

“Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!” (Psalm 150:6)

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” (Colossians 3:16)

“The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17)

He is worthy of our praise. Let’s worship Him today with the same fervor and joy of those sweet children who so blessed my heart last Sunday.
