These are troubling times. The recent economic downturn has brought unemployment and crushing financial losses to many. Families are struggling, individuals are unhappy and discouraged. Many people face each day filled with worry and fear. Perhaps you—or someone you love—is about to give in to despair.
But there’s good news, too! Terrific news, really. Here it is: No matter what happens, God is ready and waiting to give you confidence and joy. How? It’s as easy as 1-2-3.
1. Read—and believe—your Bible.
The Bible shows us that God desires our happiness, in spite of the problems that come to all of us. The Psalmist wrote, “I will be glad and rejoice in You” (Psalm 9:2), and “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning” (30:5). Isaiah wrote, “With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation” (12:3), and “You shall go out with joy, and be led out with peace” (55:12).
2. Leave hurts behind.
Do you sometimes feel hopeless or helpless? Are there hurts from your past that are still painful? If so, you are not alone. The Bible tells us that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalms 46:1). Anger can be an important step in the healing process. Then, asking God to forgive all those who have hurt you can set you free—and put you on the road to happiness.
3. Get creative with giving.
The Bible tells us, “You’re far happier giving than getting” (Acts 20:35, The Message). What can you do to help? Look around for opportunities you may be missing—give money to a good cause, organize a fund-raising event, tutor at your local school, read to an elderly neighbor, or lift the spirits of those closest to you by thanking them for the many things they do.
Yes, these are troubling times. But God is still in control! And happiness has much less to do with your checkbook and everything to do with your heart. So read your Bible, let go of past hurts, and reach out to others. Then get ready for joy.
