Pray the Psalms: Psalm 120

Watch as Rick Hamlin takes you through Psalm 120.

[MUSIC PLAYING] Hi, it’s Rick Hamlin. Psalm 120– “Deliver my soul, oh Lord, from lying lips and a deceitful tongue.” Look at the awful things that the prayer asks or this song asks to be done against lying. Arrows, coals of juniper, from a deceitful tongue.

Now, it occurs to me that lying happens a lot. I seem to see it in the news a lot. There’s these stories again and again of people in important positions businessmen, politicians, sports stars. They lie. And then they back pedal to explain why they lie.

Well, you know, in prayer we’re not meant to lie. Because if you’re lying in a prayer– how can you lie to God? He knows anyway. You’re lying to yourself.

So living the truth means praying the truth. “Deliver me, oh Lord, from a deceitful tongue.” Not just the others. It’s so easy to say, oh, they’re lying, but we should look at ourselves. What about our own tongues? What kind of things are we saying, and what are we seeing in prayer?

There should be no lies in prayer. “Deliver me, oh Lord, deliver my soul from a deceitful tongue, from lying lips.” They should not be mine. Deliver me from them. There is a Psalm against lying– Psalm 120.
