My friend Sylvia and I, both cosmetologists, were attending a hairdressers show at Hilton Head, South Carolina, where we hoped to catch up on the latest hairstyles, products and techniques. We watched a man and woman demonstrate various cuts on models.
The woman’s work was impressive. The young man was another story. He fumbled with his comb, dropped his scissors and seemed nervous. People in the audience snickered.
The next day we noticed the same two people onstage. Once again, the woman was doing fine, but the young man seemed even more frazzled. He looked ready to burst into tears.
“Let’s pray,” I said suddenly. Sylvia nodded and whispered, “Lord, please take away this hairstylist’s fear so he can do his best.”
Slowly but surely confidence imbued the young man. His “10 thumbs” became two dexterous hands as he wielded his scissors with growing assurance. At the end of the day he left the stage with head high, happy with a job well done.
I learned about a lot more than new styles and products at the hair show. God had reminded me of a time-honored technique for makeovers: heartfelt prayer.
