God’s Grace: Pass It On

I cannot earn God’s grace; it is a free gift. A gift whose value is more than my mind can comprehend.

Prayer blogger Peola Hicks
Prayer is a powerful force for good. At Guideposts, we believe in the strength of prayer to bring comfort, hope, and healing. Your generous donation today will help us continue to share the power of prayer with those in need. Together, through prayer and support, we can make a difference.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

I periodically receive savings passes from department stores. One day I was in one of these stores but did not have it with me. A kind fellow shopper told me that she did not need hers and asked if I would like it. Of course, my answer was yes. It was unasked for, but greatly appreciated.

When situations like this happen, it makes me wonder how often I have extended grace to others. When I give a gift, shouldn’t the recipient be deserving? In truth, however, this defies the definition of grace. Grace is God’s unmerited favor. I cannot earn God’s grace; it is a free gift. A gift whose value is more than my mind can comprehend. One that increases in value every time I share it with others who are in need.

As I strive to get closer to God during this season of Lent, I want to be intentional about removing stumbling blocks that hinder me from imitating Christ. My salvation is not based upon works that I have done. I did not have to accumulate points or perform a special project to qualify for God’s grace. It was given to me as a gift. I want to not only say that I am grateful but also demonstrate it by sharing God’s grace. It is an opportunity to stay focused on what is right about others. I believe God gives us families so we can practice; it seems easier to withhold grace from those we love most. Author Philip Yancey calls that “ungrace.”

My prayer point and challenge to you is to join me at the throne of grace. That is the place of prayer. It is the place where mercy flows in abundance. I am finding my place there and discovering what a difference focused prayer makes. I can obtain grace and get rid of “ungrace.” Through prayer I am much more likely to remember to pass on to others the grace that has been given to me. Prayer works.

God bless you!
