Listen to God’s Voice

While watching Undercover Boss, Guideposts blogger Michelle Cox realizes how many problems we could avoid if we’d only pay attention to God’s voice and block out all the noise.

Prayer is a powerful force for good. At Guideposts, we believe in the strength of prayer to bring comfort, hope, and healing. Your generous donation today will help us continue to share the power of prayer with those in need. Together, through prayer and support, we can make a difference.

On an episode of Undercover Boss, the CEO, Sam (with his fake name, Dave), went to his first job at the company warehouse. He was working with an employee named Troy, and they were to do a “pick” for items.

Troy’s first explanation to his new employee was about “Jennifer,” an automated voice system that instructed them about what to pick and its warehouse location. The boss looked a bit leery when he heard they had 600 picks to do.

Sam/Dave’s face was priceless as they zipped around the warehouse. Lots of “Jennifer, repeat,” comments were heard as the new recruit tried to keep up. It was a comedy of errors as he went the wrong way, pulled the wrong items and even damaged some inventory.

Troy said, “Dave looked a little bit overwhelmed. He’s got to concentrate a little harder.” And then with a bit of exasperation he added, “He’s got to learn to tune everything out and just listen to Jennifer. You have to develop a relationship with her.”

The minute Troy said those words, it was as if I could hear God whisper, “That’s exactly what My children need to do. They need to learn to tune everything out and just listen to Me.” Oh, wow.

Can you imagine the difference that would make in our lives if we worked to develop a relationship with God? If we really listened to Him? I don’t know why we do it when we have a God who has all the answers, but so many of us try to strike out on our own, to fix things ourselves, to make decisions without listening to Him—and we’d avoid so many mistakes and consequences if we’d just learn to listen to Him more.

James 1:19 says, “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath…”

And great advice is also found in Proverbs 2:2, “So that you incline your ear to wisdom, And apply your heart to understanding.”

Are you tuning everything else out and listening to His voice today? I can promise He’ll never send you in the wrong direction. Wait on His marching orders. You’ll never regret it!
