I’m a dog lover. I admit it. I grew up around dogs, I was never afraid of them and I loved my Labrador Retriever, Casey, more than I could have imagined.

Cats were…a pet I never wanted. My dad is highly allergic to them, so it wasn’t even an option when I was growing up. And if I happened to be around a friend’s cat, I was more hesitant than comfortable. I always thought they were unpredictable, hoping they wouldn’t pounce on me or surprise me in some way.

Not getting to know any cats was fine with me. I wouldn’t have to be around them if I didn’t want to, right?

Well, things change. Soon after I started dating my boyfriend, I met his mother’s two cats, Nero and Mittens. Nero’s bright eyes seemed to glisten off his black coat as he nestled calmly in a nook somewhere, but Mittens’ mysterious expression had me a bit worried and I didn’t want her to think I was encroaching on her space.
