In Times of Hardship

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.—1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV)

It may seem strange to be thankful for sorrow and hardship, but even unavoidable and painful experiences have an upside. Difficult times shine a lens on what is truly important in your life. They are moments of growth that teach valuable life lessons of compassion, faith and understanding. Know that whatever you are going through, Jesus is with you.
Heavenly Father, I am grateful for Your healing presence in my life.

Be Gentle with Yourself

And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.—1 John 4:16 (NIV)
The next time you’re comparing yourself to another person, or examining a goal that you didn’t reach, turn to the above verse and know that Jesus sees you—every single perfectly imperfect part of you— and loves you. He not only sees you as you truly are, but sees the person He created you to be… and is helping you become.
Heavenly Father, today I will try to be kind to myself, to let go of judgment and rest in Your love.

The Light of His Love

“I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.”—Isaiah 42:6–7 (NIV)

Jesus came into the dark of this world and healed us with His light and great love. He sees, knows and hears all. This verse is a reminder of God’s promise that You are never alone—and no matter how dark a situation might seem, all is possible through His glorious Light.

Heavenly Father, take my hand when I feel alone. Shine Your love on me.

Give God Your Worry List

“Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothes?”—Matthew 6:25 (NIV)
Is your faith cloaked in fear? Do you worry about big things and little things, what-ifs and what has already happened? In the above verse Jesus tells us not to worry. Worry is a choice, a wrong choice. Instead focus your trust in Him.
Dear God, I give You my worry list so that You may give me Your peace.

A World of Wonders

I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.—Psalm 139:14 (NIV)
Summer is in the air—and with it comes the urge to take time off, relax and recharge! Even if you can’t take time off, you can set aside a few minutes each day to do something you love—sit back, listen to music, or just be still. Thank God for the gift of time spent mindfully.
Heavenly Father, slow me down and quiet my mind, so that I take in the wonder of life.

Sufficient in His Hands

“How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.”—Matthew 15:34 (NIV)

Jesus is at His best when the odds are at their worst. In the above verse Jesus faced a crowd of a thousand hungry people with seven loaves of bread, and a few fish, but amazingly it was more than enough. Instead of worrying about what you don’t have, focus on abundance and trust in Jesus’ provision.

Heavenly Father, because of You I know I will always have enough.

Do Your Part

Guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are God my Savior, and my hope is in You all day long.—Psalm 25:5 (NIV)

When we ask God to change a difficult situation, we must be willing to give ourselves in any way that might help resolve it. If you’ve been asking God to intervene in a personal problem, don’t deny Him your own actions. He may want to use them.

Lord, I know You love me and are at work in my life for good. I am here to do my part.

Trapped to Triumphant

Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge, the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away…—Joshua 3:15–16 (NIV)

Sometimes in life when you are faced with a challenging situation, like Joshua, you must obediently trust God and step into unknown waters. When you feel stuck by the obstacles that are holding you back, step forward knowing that with God’s help you can go from feeling trapped to triumphant.

Lord, my course is charted. Give me the wisdom and courage to trust You.

Pray God’s Word

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.—Psalm 23:1 (KJV)

The Twenty-Third Psalm is composed of 118 words and is easy to memorize… perhaps you already know it by heart. But its power is not in memorizing the words, but rather in taking in its positive and hopeful approach to life verse by verse. Pray God’s words back to Him, and experience His goodness. Be strengthened by His promises.
Lord, You are my Shepherd…

Sprouting in Faith

Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.—Psalm 27:14 (NIV)

Just as God’s presence is seen through nature, He is planting a new season in your life. Even if you feel as though you aren’t growing, be assured that He is watering the seeds that will bud into fruition. There is always a new season ahead, a season of new beginnings.
Faithful God, thank You for nurturing my Spirit so that I may bloom into the person You intend me to be.

Forgive, Forgive, Forgive

Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.”—Matthew 18:21–22 (NIV)

Jesus invites us to be like Him, to love the people in our lives in spite of their wrongdoings and their shortcomings. He asks us to follow His teaching in the above verse to forgive and forgive again, remembering that His forgiveness is limitless.

Lord, it’s not always easy to forgive. Heal my wounded heart and teach me to love unconditionally

Rich Beyond Measure

There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: There is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.—Proverbs 13:7 (KJV)
Dr. Norman Vincent Peale famously said, “Empty pockets never held anyone back. Only empty heads and empty hearts can do that.” Some of us spend so much energy and worry over our bank accounts when the richest experience in life—a strong relationship with God—cannot be bought. And if you don’t have faith, all the money in the world will not fill the void.
Lord, my relationship with You, and all the blessings that flow because of my faith, make me rich beyond worldly measure.
