My mom loved to bake. More than that, she delighted in giving out her cookies and cakes. She usually doubled or tripled her recipes so she’d always have plenty to share. She would send goodies to our pastor’s family, friends who had a loved one in the hospital, and anyone who was in a tough situation.

Now that she’s 91, Mom has given up baking. But she still enjoys eating homebaked goodies. I use her recipes for banana bread, oatmeal raisin cookies and molasses cookies—sweets sturdy enough to arrive in delicious shape after a trip from my California home to Mom in Michigan.

The two-day shipping boxes I use are the perfect size for my home-baked goods. I can fit in twelve cookies or six to eight pieces of bread—a lot for one person but enough to share if a friend stops by. It’s a fun way to thank Mom for being so sweet.
