I recently learned about a relatively new program benefitting our active duty military members and families, as well as veterans. It’s the Blue Star Theatre program, a partnership between Blue Star Families and Theatre Communications Group.

The program was launched in Denver in 2012 with 57 participating theatres and has now doubled in size with 115 theaters nationwide.

The Blue Star Theatre Program is intended to recognize the contributions of service families as well as build stronger connections between the local theater community and military families.

Each participating Blue Star Theatre is offering discounted or complimentary admission to all military personnel and their families, as well as veterans. Education programs and other theater opportunities may be provided and discounted as well.

Our local theater, The Warehouse Theatre, is doing just that. They have been a part of the program–almost since it began–under the leadership of Paul Savas, executive and artistic director. The Warehouse Theatre began their outreach for this performance year with a kick-off event just last week.

In conjunction with their current show, Strange Snow, The Warehouse Theatre held a resource fair. They invited representatives from local programs aiding veterans and active duty military to come and share information about what they have to offer.

Then, the theater advertised the event, inviting the public to come and see where they could get plugged in. It was exciting to see all the resources in one place.

The Warehouse Theatre has a full schedule this year with Blue Star events that range from resume writing workshops to roundtable discussions.

I’m excited to see outreach and involvement between the community at large and those who serve. As a mother of a veteran, I’m touched by how God uses those in our community to remind our service men and women that He hasn’t forgotten them.
