Never Give Up On Your Dreams

God helps bring a big writing project to fulfillment.

Sometimes God places big dreams on our hearts. An unexpected one that God gave me years ago was to become a writer. I hadn’t written since I was in school (let’s just say that was a long time ago), and I’d never taken any classes in journalism. But there was no question that I’d heard God’s whisper, “I want you to write for me.”

I chuckled at the absurdity of that. But after months of nudges from Him, I finally got down on my knees and said, “Okay, if that’s what You want me to do, I’ll do it, but we might have one small problem . . . have You happened to notice that I can’t write?”

And then I heard, “That’s okay. I can. You just be willing, and I’ll take care of the rest.” And the last 15 years have been the most amazing journey of God’s “taking care of the rest.”

I’m in awe of the opportunities I’ve had to write for millions of people—sharing God’s love, inspiring stories and parenting advice. His dreams for me were so much bigger than anything I’d ever imagined.

But it’s not been an easy journey. There have been years of hard work as I’ve tried to master the craft. I’ve had hopes dashed when seemingly certain projects fell through at the last minute. And I’ve learned the art of waiting. And that is so not one of my virtues.

There have been so many rejections that I’ve thought about wallpapering my office with them. And that led to the idea for this post today. You see, God has just gift-wrapped one of my dreams and delivered it to me for Christmas.

For 10 years, my co-author and I pitched a proposal for a series of devotional books. Ten years! We received numerous rejections. We had interest from a publishing house, but the contract never happened because the editor unexpectedly changed jobs. Another publisher expressed interest, but when their company encountered a financial crisis, the plans fell apart.

Those things happened often through the years. We did other books, but not these. It was discouraging, but we kept pitching the idea to every editor who would listen, never giving up on the dream. Ten years later, the contracts came for two books—from a publisher that does beautiful books, with artwork that made our books even better. And with the release of God Glimpses from the Jewelry Box and God Glimpses from the Toolbox, God has just given us the precious gift of a dream fulfilled.

I don’t want to ever give up on His dreams for me. I never know when He’s ready to make them happen.
