Friends Forever

Do to others what you would want them to do to you.—LUKE 6:31 (NIV)

“You don’t match, girlfriend,” my best friend, Susie, told me. “And what’s up with the hair? Who told you gray was in?’”

Life with Susie was never dull. She loved fashion and colors and nail polish most of all. Six of us usually gathered for lunch every day at school. She would share with us all the latest on makeup, and of course girl talk! Susie was our gift; she made us feel loved and affirmed.

When Susie was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, we all decided that it was our turn to make her look beautiful. We
arrive at her house in teams loaded with eye shadows, polishes and lip glosses. We do her makeup and her nails, and of course her pedicure. Sometimes, we do the “whole works” beauty treatment; other times, we do just one or two things, depending on her energy and comfort level. Susie’s eyes shine just as ours did when she would plan our makeovers at school.

As her friends, we commit each day to making her feel as special as she made us feel all those years ago. Susie is our friend, our sister in the Lord, and his daughter.

Dear Lord, thank you for friendship and thank you for being our best friend all the days of our lives.
