Resting in Sweet Memories

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.—MATHEW 11:28 (NIV)

“Good morning,” my mother would whisper as she woke us up. “I just turned on the heater, and it will get warm soon.” She’d spread the quilt she’d made over us.

That was my Mom—always thinking of us. I remembered those times as I woke her up this morning. “Good morning, Mama!”

She barely stirred as she tried to wake up. She is recuperating from hip surgery, and she is in pain. Not knowing what to do, I pulled out the quilt that she had made for us so very long ago. I spread it gently across her feet.

“Good morning, Carmen,” she whispered. “You kept the quilt?”

“Of course I did.”

“Remember how cold our little house used to be?” she asked.

“Of course, I remember,” I told her as I kissed her forehead.

With that, my mother fell back to sleep, but this time, her face was not blank; her face was soft and not hardened with pain. I knew that God had brought back to her all the sweet memories of our childhoods. In that instant, she rested.

Thank you, Lord, for refreshing us and reminding us that you are the keeper of our memories and our souls, so that we can rest in thee.
