My mother-in-law, Betty, loved books and reading. She went to the bookstore in every town she visited, and always gave books as gifts. Even the elementary school students she tutored got books.

After Betty passed away, I gave some of her books to family members but wondered what to do with the rest of her collection.

Then I thought back to my daughter’s first year of teaching. She hadn’t had many books in her classroom library. Employees at our local book exchange mentioned that someone who’d turned in books had donated the credit—a quarter of the books’ original price—to create an account for new teachers. I’d used it to buy books for my daughter’s classroom.

When I took Betty’s books to the exchange, they earned almost $100 in credits! In honor of all Betty’s volunteer tutoring, I donated the credit to teachers. I think she would have been thrilled.
