My phone dinged. A text from my daughter Anna, asking for her aunt Pam’s address. I had sent both my daughters, now grown and married, all the family addresses at some point. But they could never seem to find them.
I pulled out the address book my sister-in-law had given me almost 40 years ago to look up the info. Wait, this is what the girls need! I used my address book all the time, whenever I sent a card or letter.
I ordered two address books. When they arrived, I filled in contact information for relatives, past neighbors and family friends—all in pencil so it could be easily updated. I attached a pretty, sharpened pencil to each book with a ribbon. There! Now Emily and Anna would have everything they needed to keep in touch with the people they love. I wrapped the books and put them under the Christmas tree.
My daughters were surprised—and delighted—by the address books. Sometimes the old-fashioned way of doing something works the best.
