Christmas is a time for family traditions, and I’m so proud of the one that my daughter, Holley, started five years ago. Holley wanted to teach her daughter, Bailey, then eight, how to show Jesus’ caring spirit. Holley and her husband, Casey, bought a bunch of five-dollar coffee gift cards. On Christmas night, the three of them got into the car and drove around, handing out the cards to people who were working. Gas station attendants. Firefighters. Pharmacy staff.

Bailey learned to appreciate that essential workers sacrifice time with their families to keep things running on holidays. And the delight in the recipients’ eyes showed her that to give is also a gift.

This year, my granddaughter turned 13 and she’s looking forward to carrying on her family’s tradition. She and her parents will wait until my husband and I leave after Christmas dinner to undertake their merry mission. I raised Holley to get involved in the community—it’s gratifying to know that custom has been passed to the next generation.
