I was shocked when the superintendent of our high school, Hay Springs High, told me we were considering scaling back this year’s prom. I’m a math teacher as well as the junior class sponsor. The prom’s a huge deal. This year’s budget neared six thousand five hundred dollars; our students had been fund-raising for months. “The thought was that the money would be better spent if it were donated to a Haiti earthquake relief fund,” he said.
The student council members were all for it. Could they get their classmates on board? The juniors and seniors cast their votes a few days later. Virtually every student was in favor!
And so was our community. Donations quickly came in to cover the cost of the prom, but the students insisted that money be given to earthquake survivors too! A DJ offered his services free of charge. Instead of a lavish dinner, we’ll be serving lasagna and brownies baked by faculty and parents. I’m sure the prom will be a night to remember. Our students have guaranteed that.
