Several years ago, I was going through a rough time. Nothing was going well at work, and I was struggling to stay positive. After dinner one evening, my husband, Jeff, suggested we take a walk. He knew it would cheer me up. It did.
That night, I thought, Instead of dwelling on what’s wrong, why not keep track of the good things in my life? I wrote “walks with Jeff” on a slip of paper and put it in an old jar. When the flowers I planted started to bloom, I wrote about them and put that paper in the jar. When it was finally warm enough to wear my favorite sundress, I wrote that down. On New Year’s Eve, I opened the jar and read through all of the good things that had happened that year.
I’ve kept up this habit over the years. It has helped me through my husband’s serious illness, my own breast cancer diagnosis and the loss of my mom last year. No matter how hard life is, my Good Things Jar reminds me that there are always blessings to be thankful for.
