6 Shows To Catch Up On Before The 2017 Emmys

The 69th Annual Emmy Awards are over and the golden statues have already been passed out, but that doesn’t mean you should sleep on some of the shows nominated this year.

The 69th Annual Emmy Awards are over and the golden statues have already been passed out, but that doesn’t mean you should sleep on some of the shows nominated this year. We’re highlighting a few series people can’t stop talking about. Some are inspiring, some nostalgic, but all of the shows up for awards this year have made their mark on pop culture. Here are six worth watching.

The Pearson Family

1 of 6 This Is Us – Outstanding Drama Series

This Is Us has kept Kleenex in business this year, making fans sob into their tissues with the story of the Pearsons, a unique family of five struggling to stay together over the decades. The show may have captured fans’ attention with unexpected twists and cliffhangers but it’s built a loyal following thanks to its emotional storytelling and heart. Watching the Pearson siblings grow up, stay connected, and support each other through struggles and loss reminded us of the importance of family and the power of love.

Claire Foy in "The Crown"

2 of 6 The Crown – Outstanding Drama Series

Historically, the Emmys love British period dramas, but in the case of The Crown, that’s not the only reason it’s been nominated this year. The show – which was the most-expensive offering Netflix produced this year – follows the life of a young Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) as she shoulders the burden of leading her people while still living her own life. It’s beautiful to look at and filled with a stellar cast, but more than that, The Crown is an interesting glimpse into the responsibilities, trials, and triumphs of the royal family.

Stranger Things

3 of 6 Stranger Things – Outstanding Drama Series

You don’t have to be an 80s kid to appreciate the nostalgia evoked by Stranger Things. The Netflix series is an ode to the decade and some popular films of the era but it’s also a sweet story about a group of friends trying to save one of their own. It’s got a bit of mystery surrounding it and a touch of the supernatural, but you can’t help but to enjoy watching this rag-tag bunch go on adventures while trying to save their town.

Black-ish

4 of 6 Black-ish – Outstanding Comedy Series

A network offering, Black-ish has consistently brought the laughs to ABC. The series about an African American family trying to “make it” in America is heartwarming, relevant, and full of humor. As Drew (Anthony Anderson) and Bow (Tracee Ellis-Ross) try to raise their kids right – giving them every opportunity to succeed while also making sure they’re connected to their roots – the show addresses current events in a poignant way that’ll make you think and make you smile.

Dolly Parton's Christmas of Many Colors

5 of 6 Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love – Outstanding Television Movie

This heartwarming follow-up to Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors follows Dolly’s father as he tries to buy a wedding ring for his wife while the town prepares for a dangerous blizzard that threatens Christmas celebrations. Anything from Dolly Parton is worth a watch but this made-for-TV-movie is a good reminder of the bonds that keep us together and the truly important things in life: faith, family, and love.

Oprah Winfrey in "Henrietta Lacks"

6 of 6 The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks – Outstanding Television Movie

This Oprah Winfrey-starring vehicle tells an inspiring story that changed the way we viewed medicine. Henrietta Lacks became the unwitting pioneer for medical breakthroughs when her cells were used to create the first immortal human cell line in the early 1950s. The movie follows her descendants as they fight for recognition for their mother’s sacrifice and for a way to heal from the trauma of her death.
