While scrolling through a website of national days and holidays recently, I noticed that January 26 is National Spouses Day, and since I’ve been blessed with one of the best spouses on the planet, I figured it would be a great day to give a much deserved thank-you to my guy.
Paul and I celebrated 41 years of marriage last September 16. That’s a LONG time for a man to have to put up with me! Before I make him sound too perfect, I’ll admit that—like little Jeffy in the Family Circus comic strip—Paul often leaves a trail of clothes, papers and coffee mugs behind him. And he sometimes forgets what I ask him to do and picks up the wrong stuff when I give him a list for the grocery store.
No, he’s not perfect—but he’s been perfect for me.
So today I just want to express my gratitude for this special man of mine. For the past 41 years, he’s said the words, “I love you” thousands of times—making me an oh-so-wealthy woman.
Paul is a man who doesn’t just say the words, but also shows that he loves me by the little things he does, like my coming downstairs in the morning and finding that he’s emptied the dishwasher because he knew that I was tired, or walking out to the car on a cold winter morning and discovering that he cleaned the frost from my windshield so I wouldn’t have to do that.
I’m grateful for a husband who’s worked hard for our family, for a man with a heart that’s tender to others. I remember a time in the early years of our marriage when he bought shoes for someone who needed them—when his own shoes had holes in them. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen him reach into his billfold to help someone who was going through a hard time.
I’m thankful beyond words that our sons had him for a daddy and that our grandbabies have a granddaddy whose heart melts like a marshmallow when they’re around, a granddaddy who spoils them rotten. They couldn’t have a better role model.
Most of all, I’m grateful for a man who loves God, for a husband who prays with me and for me, for a spouse who makes me want to be a better person.
So, Happy National Spouses Day, baby! I’m glad you’re mine.
How about you? What do you want to say to your husband or wife today? Take some time to think about how your spouse has touched your life. This would be a great opportunity to express your love and thanks for all those little (and big) things that we sometimes take for granted.
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. (Corinthians 13:13)
