I was nearly home from work when—bang! My car lurched forward and I jerked backward. Rear-ended on a Friday afternoon? I thought. Great.
I signaled for the other driver to follow me to an exit where we could assess the damage. I braced for an argument, but the young man who hit me was so nice and polite my frustration disappeared.
“It was all my fault,” he said. “I was preoccupied. I’m on my way to ask my girlfriend to marry me.”
“Congratulations!” I said.
“I’m not sure I’ll go through with it,” he said, looking down. “I’ve got cold feet. And now this.”
“It’s natural for people to get nervous before taking a big step,” I said. “And fender benders happen all the time. Please don’t let this accident ruin your plans.”
The damages to my car were minor. The young man and I exchanged phone numbers and addresses and then he drove off, thanking me for my advice. I left a message on his machine to report that all was well with my car.
A couple days later I received the nicest apology note. But the best part was the postscript: “She said yes.”
