A Daily Guideposts devotional by Jeff Japinga on Saturday, February 26th was an unexpected surprise that spoke to my reasons for the New Year’s resolutions I made.
I had never thought about the connection between the discipline it takes to do anything athletic and the discipline it takes for one’s journey towards spiritual growth. Although I have been both an athlete and a coach, it just never occurred to me that the repetition and practice it takes to be good at sport or activity is the same repetition and practice necessary for growing spiritually.
When I made my New Year’s resolutions I thought about all the positive growth and changes I had made in the past two years and resolved to continue with the positive growth and changes on the same regular basis I had already established. This meant keeping up with the commitment to eating healthier (Weight Watchers) and exercising (walking and golf). For spiritual growth it meant prayer, regular worship, forgiveness (self and others), music, and my Daily Guideposts.
This past week I grew a bit more spiritually during my devotional time with Daily Guideposts because I read it on a daily basis. This coming week I plan to get back to practicing my golf swing regularly so that it will also be something I do well—or at least well for me.
Thanks, Jeff!
