Pray the Psalms: Psalm 20

Guideposts Executive Editor Rick Hamlin shares how to pray Psalm 20.

Prayer is a powerful force for good. At Guideposts, we believe in the strength of prayer to bring comfort, hope, and healing. Your generous donation today will help us continue to share the power of prayer with those in need. Together, through prayer and support, we can make a difference.

Psalm 20– about once a year, I go bet on a horse race. Here in New York, we have off-track betting, and you can go bet on a horse race without even going to the race. To tell you the truth, I never really win, but it’s kind of fun to do, just maybe trusting your luck.

Well, this is one of the hardest things in this Psalm, which is trusting God in everything– not horse races, not my bank account, not luck, but trust in God. You know, the word horse is not used that often in the Bible, and it is used here. Some trust in horses, some in chariots, but we will remember the name of the Lord. Some trust in horses, some in chariots, but we will remember the name of the Lord. Maybe just once a year, a bet on a horse– but the balance should really be a bet on God.
