Pray the Psalms: Psalm 50

Guideposts Executive Editor Rick Hamlin shares how to pray Psalm 50.

Prayer is a powerful force for good. At Guideposts, we believe in the strength of prayer to bring comfort, hope, and healing. Your generous donation today will help us continue to share the power of prayer with those in need. Together, through prayer and support, we can make a difference.

[MUSIC PLAYING] Hi. Rick Hamlin with Psalm 50.

I think we probably all know people– and sometimes we become like this– we become our martyrs for our faith, for our work, for our families. And we carry it, and we want people to know how we’ve suffered for something. It may be because we worked so hard on that church committee, or we worked so hard for that project at work.

And it’s rather odious, this feeling of martyrdom that we want to show everybody. There’s something here in the psalm when God is speaking about the world, and everything is his already. So sacrifices that we think we’re making just for him we don’t really need to do, because praising him is good enough. Listen to what he says in this psalm.

“I will not take a bull from your house, nor goats out of your fold, for every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.” He’s got it already. We can give it to him, we share it to him, we give back to God, but we can do it with a sense of joy because we’re sharing what is his already. No sense of martyrdom, just joy. Psalm 50.
