Be the Light

Turn from evil and do good.—Psalm 34:14 (NIV)

When something bad happens, do you complain, dwell on the past and spread negativity? This Scripture tells us to do the opposite; not just to turn away from evil, but to do good. When you encounter anger, jealousy or hatred strive to make things better. Bring love and understanding to the problem.

Lord, restore me with Your peace. When I’m on the edge of losing my temper, give me the patience and foresight to return good for evil.

Keep Praying

When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.—James 4:3 (NIV)
If you have been praying for something for a very long time, it may seem that God is not answering your prayer. Know that prayer is something much greater than the means to simply getting what you want. Prayer centers your life and your focus on God. Trust that He knows your destination in life and will make sure you will arrive there.
Lord, if what I’m praying for is not to be, please help me to turn a corner so that I begin to find new purpose and new dreams.

Take Notice

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.—Psalm 19:1 (NIV)

The earth is a beautiful place and yet, we often forget to see the sunrise, notice the miraculous flower sprouting in a crack in the sidewalk, or appreciate the glorious taste of a fresh-picked apple. The world’s blessings are testimony to God’s brilliant creatorship. Be mindful of His many glorious gifts; look closely at the grandeur all around you.

Heavenly Father, today and every day help me notice the spectacular displays of Your love.

A Quick Pick-Me-Up

“Hallelujah! Praise God from heaven, praise Him from the mountaintops; Praise Him, all you His angels, praise Him, all you His warriors, Praise Him, sun and moon, praise Him, you morning stars; Praise Him, high heaven, praise Him, heavenly rain clouds; Praise, oh let them praise the name of God— he spoke the word, and there they were!”—Psalm 148:1 (MSG)
Does your spirit need a boost? Don’t reach for a coffee or an energy drink. Instead spend a few minutes praising Jesus. Invite His joy to fill you. Praise Jesus for Who He is, what He’s done, and what He has promised to do.
Heavenly Father, thank You for being my victorious Savior, best Friend and holy Lord.

Jesus’ Prayer

“I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those You have given me, for they are Yours… My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message… Father, I want those You have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory You have given me because You loved me before the creation of the world.”—John 17:9, 20, 24 (NIV)
When you read John Chapter 17, you discover that Jesus prayed for protection, joy and unity for His followers. If you are feeling overwhelmed, say the above verse and take comfort in Jesus’ prayer. Know that He is on your side.
Dear Jesus, your prayers are a great blessing to me.

Write Your Legacy

No one was sorry when he died.—2 Chronicles 21:20 (NLT)

The above verse was said about King Jehoram, a ruler who lived a life of greed and power, a life totally apart from God. In contrast, consider the Apostle Paul’s “epitaph” that he himself wrote in a final letter, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of His return” (2 Timothy 4:7-8). How do you want to be remembered? It’s never too late or too early to live your best life.

Lord, I want my life to be one of purpose. A generous life filled with meaning, a faith-filled life of service.

Where Are You Going?

The angel said to her, “Hagar, Sarai’s servant, where have you come from, and where are you going?” “I’m running away from my mistress, Sarai,” she replied.—Genesis 16:8 (NLT)
Despite careful planning, sometime circumstances force you into a situation where your options aren’t what you want. Like Hagar, in the above verse, there are times where you have to go back to a place you didn’t want to, or surrender to a situation that you hoped was over. In those times, it’s best to take a deep breath and accept God’s will.
Lord, I trust Your plan and Your path. Your will, not mine.

The Joy of Jesus in Your Life

But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you.—Psalm 5:11 (NIV)
Happiness is usually tied to life’s circumstances, but joy is quite different. Joy isn’t simply an emotion. Joy is having a relationship with Jesus and knowing that because of His presence in your life everything will be okay. Regardless of chaos and difficulties, your abiding faith will see you through.
Dear Lord, I have faith that you are working everything out for me.

Onward and Upward

Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.—Hebrews 12:1–2 (AKJV)
Are you still fretting over something you said or did? Don’t get down on yourself when you’ve made a mistake. Instead remember that Jesus works in your life to grow you and guide you with His perfect timing. He started you on life’s journey and He will lead you onward and upward, all the way home.
Dear Lord, I need You to help me figure out my life. Thank You for picking me up when I fall and guiding me to victory.

All You Really Need

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”—John 14:6 NIV
We often make life a lot more complicated that it truly is. Simply put, Jesus is all we need. Corrie ten Boom said, “You don’t really know Jesus is all you need, until Jesus is all you have.” You don’t need to wait for life’s difficulties to bring you to a place where you are ready to truly accept and understand the power of Jesus. Open the door to your heart and spirit for He is “the Way, the Truth and the Life.”
Lord Jesus, when I am distracted by life’s busyness, guide my focus back to You.

Spiritual Weeding

Some fell in the weeds; as it came up, it was strangled among the weeds and nothing came of it. Some fell on good earth and came up with a flourish, producing a harvest exceeding his wildest dreams.—Mark 4:7-8 (MSG)

This time of year as flowers bloom and vegetable gardens burst with bounty, it’s a good time to reflect on your spiritual life. Has anything crept into your life—material want, or an unhealthy habit—that needs weeding out? It’s important to nurture your relationship with God by taking out anything that separates you from Him.

Lord, help me weed out anything that is keeping me from blooming and flourishing the way that You intend.

The Path to Joy

I pondered the direction of my life, and I turned to follow Your laws. I will hurry, without delay, to obey Your commands.—Psalm 119:59–60 (NLT)
Today, pray the above verse and ponder the direction you’re headed. Know that God listens to His Word as you pray it back to Him. He cares how you apply His lessons to your life. Living by His Word and walking with Jesus is the path to joy.
Heavenly Father, I turn to follow Your commands.
