A Lesson from King Saul

Saul groaned to his armor bearer, “Take your sword and kill me before these pagan Philistines come to run me through and taunt and torture me.”—1 Samuel 31:4 NLT

Saul is a tragic figure in the Bible. His lessons teach a great deal about why we fail and why instead of trying to force God to do what we want, we should pray in faith and relinquish the outcome to Him. When you are in a difficult position, instead of trying to rush an answer, pray and open your heart to accept His response.

God Almighty, I long to follow You faithfully even when the outcome goes against my wishes.

You Are Divinely Led

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.—Romans 8:28 NIV

God’s intervention is not always obvious. Sometimes He uses indirect circumstances and unlikely people to help us. Although you may not be aware of God’s hand guiding you through your life’s journey, in time and through retrospection, His work will be revealed.

Father God, when I reflect on my life and see the amazing “coincidences” that have led me to where I am, I know it is truly You leading the way.

A Worthy Journey

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.—2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV

God’s promise is not that life will be easy but that the journey will be worth it. One of the best measures of your faith is how much you trust God when blessings don’t seem to be flowing. In these times, take your eyes off of your problems and focus on God. Life’s most valuable experiences are often found amidst the toughest times.

Lord, the weight of my problems dissolves in the light of Your grace and glory.

Serving God’s Kingdom

Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”—Luke 9:62 NIV

Jesus tells us that to follow His Word, you must look ahead and focus your actions on serving the Kingdom of Heaven. When someone needs your assistance, do you make an excuse as to why you can’t help? Instead, make time to be of service knowing that your actions are following Christ.

Dear Lord, guide me to nurture those around me with a listening ear and a helping hand.

Reflect His Heavenly Light

For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.—2 Corinthians 4:6 NIV

Devote yourself to developing a closer relationship with God. Are you reflecting His light by showing kindness, patience and generosity with others? When God’s love shines in your heart, you spread His qualities here on earth.

Lord, thank You for shining Your light in my heart and showing me that sharing Your love is the best way to truly feel it.

Are You Ready?

And to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.—Ephesians 4:24 NIV

Jesus is calling you to let go of any emotions, wants and desires that are harming your well-being. Now is the perfect time to reflect on who you want to be. Release your old agendas, leave your old and tired ways behind and begin anew.

Heavenly Father, I am ready for a new life that is focused on serving You.

Who Am I, Lord?

But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”—Exodus 3:11 NIV

In the above verse Moses’ response to God’s call is directly opposite to Isaiah’s, “Here I am! Send me” (Isaiah 6:8). Yet it’s understandable that when called to do something outside of our comfort zone, we doubt our own ability. God has given each of us unique skills and gifts to fulfill our purpose here on earth.

Dear God, because of Your power and grace I have the strength and confidence to complete the task You have called me to do. Here I am! Send me.

Love in Action

Lord, do not hold this sin against them.—Acts 7:60 NIV

Search your heart. Is there someone you need to forgive? Jesus wants you to release the burden of anger and resentment and open your heart to feeling the freedom and peace that comes only through forgiveness.

Heavenly Father, I want my life to be centered on Your love in action. Help me have the grace to forgive others who have harmed me.

Actively Seek the Lord

But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul.—Deuteronomy 4:29 NIV

What a beautiful promise. Seek God and you will find Him! But just as one should enjoy the journey and not just the destination, seeking God is an important and active part of your faith. Make it a practice to actively seek God in your life. The more you search for Him and His good works, the more blessings you will discover.

Almighty God, my faith journey brings me countless blessings—among them is the truth that when I seek You, I feel Your presence.

To Glorify God

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.—Matthew 5:16 (KJV)

Striving to be your best when only you and God know is a beautiful reflection of your faith. Dwight L. Moody famously said, “Character is what you are in the dark.” Your secrets reveal what you really think of yourself and your relationship with God.

Lord, I long to glorify You with good works that only You and I know about.

God is Love

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.—1 Corinthians 13:13 NIV

The Bible teaches that God is love, and when love is our motivation—when our actions are guided by selfless love—we truly experience His divine and perfect love. By connecting to God in prayer and feeling the Source of all love, we can shine a bit of heaven onto those around us.

Dear Lord, I long to be generous with my love, extending it to everyone in my life.

Lively Hope

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.—1 Peter 1:3 KJV

With Easter behind us, it may seem as if the daily grind has taken over and your spirit is weary, but the victory of the cross isn’t behind us at all! Through the resurrection of Jesus, God has promised us “lively” hope. When our human hopes turn to dust, God’s promise abides.

Oh, Lord, open my eyes to see Your gifts. Please remind me of the triumph of Your resurrection in my daily struggles.
