When it comes to Hollywood, longevity is key, and if having a long, sustainable career is the goal of every actor, the younger crowd might want to take some notes from these icons. From musical legends going strong on stage and on the big screen to the TV stars still making us laugh and a couple of Oscar-winners showing their range, these older celebrities are proving that talent and a good work ethic are ageless. Here are eight Hollywood veterans stealing the spotlight in 2018.
1 of 8 Cher
Just call 2018 the year of Cher. The musical icon is having a moment this year and fans couldn’t be happier. At 72-years-old, Cher is proving age is just a number, keeping busy with projects on stage and on the big screen. You probably already caught her memorable turn in the recent Mama Mia: Here We Go Again (she played Meryl Streep’s mother, a disco-loving grandma who gave us an unforgettable rendition of the ABBA classic “Fernando”). Following the success of the film, Cher’s got an album full of ABBA covers coming out, a documentary about her life and career dropping in December, and if you want to hear her magical pipes in person, she’s continuing her Las Vegas residency for another year.
2 of 8 Angela Basset
Angela Basset is putting the rest of us to shame. The actress just celebrated her 60th birthday, but she already rang in the year starring in the revolutionary superhero blockbuster Black Panther and the hit FOX TV series 9-1-1. Basset, whose husband Courtney B. Vance is also enjoying success in Hollywood, popped up in another action blockbuster Mission Impossible: Fallout hit theaters in July. Now, she’s gearing up to lead the sophomore season of 9-1-1.
Sissy Spacek gave us nightmares when she starred in Stephen King’s legendary teen horror flick, Carrie. Forty years later and Spacek’s proving she’s still got it, delivering an absolutely chilling turn as Ruth Deaver in Hulu’s Castle Rock. The 68-year-old is garnering praise from critics for her portrayal of an aging mother struggling in the grips of dementia.
4 of 8 Michelle Pfeiffer
Michelle Pfeiffer is enjoying something of a career renaissance recently. The 60-year-old Oscar-nominated actress stole every scene of two of the biggest films of 2017: Murder on the Orient Express and Darren Aronofsky’s Mother!. This year, Pfeiffer returned to the big screen, playing the mysterious Janet Van Dyne in Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp. She’s set to appear in another Marvel property, the highly anticipated Avengers film coming next year, and she’ll be starring opposite Angeline Jolie in the upcoming Maleficent sequel.
5 of 8 Ted Danson
Ted Danson is bringing his leading-man status to the small screen again, co-leading one of the biggest comedies of the year, NBC’s The Good Place. The 70-year-old Cheers star is currently apart of another critically-acclaimed comedy ensemble, playing Michael, the mastermind of the show who attempts to help Kristen Bell’s character find her best-self. Of course, the show is filled with twists and Michael is never who he seems to be, something Danson is obviously having a great time playing on screen.
6 of 8 Pierce Brosnan
Pierce Brosnan may have hung up his James Bond tuxedo decades ago, but the dapper 65-year-old actor is still stealing our hearts, this time in musical form. Brosnan returned for this year’s Mama Mia sequel where he showed off his skills on the dancefloor and his vocal chops. He’s also got an action flick coming out this year, and he’s starring on AMC’s latest drama, The Son.
7 of 8 Jeff Goldblum
Jeff Goldblum became an internet sensation this year. The 65-year-old actor revived his role in the Jurassic Park franchise, starring opposite Chris Pratt in Fallen Kingdom. He also played the eccentric, brightly-outfitted Grand Master in Taika Waititi’s blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok. On top of that, Goldblum has a jazz album that’s dropping this year and a pair of movies yet to be released. Oh, he’s also had monuments built to him overseas too.
No celebrity on this list has enjoyed a career as diverse and award-winning as Denzel Washington. The 63-year-old actor, producer, and director has two Oscars on his shelf and he’s not slowing down anytime soon. Following the success of his most recent films, Fences and Roman J. Israel, Washington returned to action with his hit sequel, The Equalizer 2. Watch our interview with Denzel Washington here.
