Another Physical Goal Met: 5 Miles!

How she reached her goal of running five miles.

For the past several weeks it has rained off and on every day, so it was so wonderful to come home from work Friday evening to a beautiful sunshiny and mild afternoon.

I decided to go for the six mile trek that I often take when I have a little extra time. After warming up by walking for about three-fourths of a mile I began to jog. As I ran I thought to myself, I wonder if I can run the remaining five and one-fourth miles.

That particular evening I was running alone, as my children who often run with me were off at the Friday night football game. I was enjoying the tranquility, and as I ran and I thanked God for all He has created and for healing me physically, spiritually, and mentally through this New Healthy You program. Many thoughts flowed through my mind as I searched for God’s will in my life.

While I was running and taking in all the beauty of nature, three deer suddenly ran out across the road in front of me. How enjoyable it was to experience wildlife in such close proximity. It reminded me of the song “As the Deer Pants for the Water.”

As the deer pants for the water,
So my soul longs after You.
You alone are my heart’s desire
And I long to worship You.

I want You more than gold or silver,
Only You can satisfy.
You alone are the real joy-giver
And the apple of my eye.

Just as the deer pants for the water I desire to please my Lord, and I know that being healthy pleases Him. He satisfies all my needs and desires, and I no longer need food to do that.

In striving to please Him I continue to set fitness goals. My next two goals are to be able to run in a 10K and then a half marathon. By continuing to set goals it keeps us focused and striving to succeed and improve.

As I was returning home the sun began to set and the sky started to darken. I still lacked about one final mile, but felt satisfied that I had already run farther than I ever had before. I looked up and in the distance I could see the silhouette of a person walking towards me. I soon realized it was my husband, my hero, with a flashlight in hand to make sure I made it safely back home.

We ran that final mile together with him encouraging me the whole way. When I finally made it back home and realized I had completed the five mile run he told me that he was very proud of my accomplishment.

That’s one more goal met on this journey to a New Healthier You!
